Drill
What is drill? Generally speaking, drill is “instruction or training in military exercises”. In the RAFAC this mainly applies to cadets marching in a squad. Drill trains cadets to be organised and disciplined individuals, remembering instructions and carrying them out accurately. It also trains cadets to work as a team - when a squad of cadets comes to attention, there’s only one ‘bang’ as all their feet hit the ground at the same time.
When on camps or ceremonial parades, drill is used to move large numbers of cadets around in a smart, orderly fashion. It also shows off the the high standard of dress and discipline that the RAFAC is renowned for.
After a few years of drill experience, cadet NCO’s have the opportunity to instruct other cadets in how to participate in a drill squad, take charge of a drill squad themselves, or even play a major part in a ceremonial parade.
