Guest Speakers

Every so often, the squadron invites a guest speaker to come along on a parade night a give a presentation to the cadets. The presentations are often quite varied, so give the cadets an opportunity to learn and ask about something that may interest them or something they previously knew nothing about.

Rev Dr David Greenaway a.k.a "The Padre"
Minister and Squadron Chaplin
Various
The Padre is our most regular guest speaker. He comes along to the squadron on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss a variety of topics with the cadets. Although he's a minister, the Padre's topics are generally philosophical or historcal in nature and are intended to get cadets thinking and talking about things that they wouldn't normally discuss.

Past topics have included:
  • The Padre's time in the military (he was a soldier before becoming a minister).
  • The various turning points of World War II.
  • The arguments for & against Trident.
  • The arguements for & against Scottish independance (in the lead up the 2014 referendum).

Robotics
Peter is the man responsible for starting the Rampaging Chariots Guild and rolling out the robotics project to a number of high schools, Young Engineers Clubs and Air Cadet squadrons (including ourselves). Peter's main presentation centers on how he and a team of cadets from 870 (Dreghorn) Squadron built their extrememly successful Typhoon & Typhoon 2 robots to compete in the Robot Wars TV programme and ended up being crowned UK champions.

Peter follows up this presentation with an inter-flight robotics competition, giving each cadet the opportunity to put their driving skills to the test in an obstacle course.

If time permits, Peter may also give a small presentation on his time as an RAF pilot and test pilot.

He has come back on a number of occassions to teach cadets about fieldcraft and give them an insight into life in the RAF. In 2015 he helped the cadets prepare for the first aid competition and give them a short presentation about his time on MERT (Medical Emergency Response Team) in Afghanistan.
